Description
The KEF Q8 Meta Atmos Speaker is designed for multichannel home cinema systems. Especially Dolby Atmos systems that normally have ceiling speakers. The speakers can be wall or ceiling-mounted. Additionally, they can be mounted to fire upwards and bounce the sound off the ceiling.
Moreover, the other eight speakers in the Q range can be used to create a whole system. The fitted Uni-Q driver is actually a two-way unit with a central tweeter mounted over a midrange/bass unit. Importantly the Q range is now fitted with MAT. Metamaterial Absorption technology reduces the sound coming from the rear of the drivers for clean and pure audio.
12th generation Uni-Q with MAT™ driver
The Uni-Q driver fitted to the KEF Q8 Meta Atmos Speaker is now in its 12th generation. Moreover, the latest version has MAT fitted. The centrally placed tweeter sits over the midrange unit and provides a single-point source. This distributes sound over a wide area.
Moreover, this tends to correct any timing errors. Most speakers have the tweeter and midrange unit some distance apart. This delivers the sound to the listener at slightly different times muddying the sound.
What is Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT™)?
The KEF Q8 Meta Atmos Speaker is fitted with MAT technology. Metamaterial Absorption Technology features a maze-like material that absorbs 99% of the sound coming from the rear of the tweeter.
This prevents any interference with the midrange/bass unit. Some cheaper full-range speakers come with a whizzer cone that is similar in principle to the Uni-Q driver. This aids with the high-frequency response. However, it is not a separate unit.
About Dolby Atmos
Dolby Atmos uses more advanced technology than earlier surround sound systems. It can feature over eleven independent channels. Notably a 3D sound field is created by having height and ceiling speakers.
The KEF Q8 Meta Atmos Speaker is intended for this purpose. The speaker is angled and can be wall or ceiling-mounted. It can also be angled upwards to bounce the sound of the ceiling instead. Sound objects are created that can be located anywhere in 3D space.
Simpler home cinema systems
The KEF Q Meta speaker range can be used to create simpler home cinema systems. A 5.1 system can be formed by using either of the floor-standing or bookshelf speakers for the front left and right pair.
There is also the Q6 for the centre speaker. Net the Q1 or Q4 can be used for the rear surround channels. The Q4 is an LCR design that can be used in any position. Lastly, the .1 refers to a subwoofer and can be from the KEF Cube range.
AV receivers
The KEF Q8 Meta Atmos Speaker needs to be driven by a dedicated AV receiver that has Dolby Atmos decoding Built-in. Additionally, the AV receiver will have the required number of amplifier channels. Several stand-alone AV receivers are available. For dedicated cinema rooms separate amplifier units are also available along with apps and streamers.
