KLH Audio Model Five Speakers (Pair)

OK, so I am running the KLH Model 5s with a Arcam SAS20 Amplifier, Denton CD Player and a Thorens TD1500. The amp drives the speakers very well indeed, I do no have a large listening room and the speakers fill the room with sound at a moderate level. The speaker finish is excellent, the west African mahogany is a neat and tidy and the cotton grills provided give the speakers a old school look that is rarely seen today. The manual that came with the speakers is first class giving clear set up instructions and enough information to allow one to simply get on with the job. It is true that the 5s are quite forgiving when it comes to placement but this does not mean that improvements cannot be made by careful positioning and tweaking, in fact the speakers that I set up initially sounded in another world once I had spent time carefully analysing the sound and positioning the speakers for the best response to my room. I was rewarded for doing this. And speaking of reward, what was the benefit of taking my time? Well, out of the box the speakers sounded great but after careful listening, analysing and positioning the speakers opened up in ways that I did not expect. Firstly, the bass! It would be fair to say that I do not need a sub with these speakers because I tried the sub initially and found that the balance of the speakers was altered by the addition of the extra sound coming from the sub, once I ditched the sub the bass from the 5s simply did their job, and the job is good. A strong almost (sub like) bass is produced that perfectly compliments the mids and upper sections, vocals are true which creates an experience of being with the singer rather than hearing the singer somewhere in the mix and the mids compelment the upper and lower frequencies. Separation is another strong point hearing instruments within spaces rather than from the apeaker itself. So, what music works with the 5? All of it! Deep purple from 1970 sounded awesome, Procol Harum wonderful and Jazz and Classical clear and precise. I rarely feel moved to give a product 5 out of 5 but here I must. KLH has done a wonderful job with the 5s and they are definitely a speaker that punches well above their price bracket.
