What is DAB and DAB+?
DAB stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting. DAB is broadcast from multiplexes and offers a wide range of radio stations. It does not use an analogue signal and is thus not prone to noise and interference. DAB began to be broadcast at the turn of the century using the MP2 codec.
DAB+ came along later and uses the more efficient AAC codec. DAB was meant to replace analogue FM, however only Norway has actually ceased FM transmissions, as of 2023.
FM radio
FM radio was first deveoped in the 1930s and uses an analogue Frequency Modulation system, Large numbers of FM stations are still broadcasting in the UK. FM was supposed to be switched off when most people were using DAB. However, no set date has been announced and broadcasts are still likely to continue until at least 2030.
Internet radio
There are many hundreds of internet radio stations available from around the world. The Pro-Ject Tuner Box S3 DAB+ connects to your home network via WIFI. You will then be able to access online radio stations as well as podcasts and audio books.
This is also known as streaming radio or webcasting. You can often find niche stations that only play your kind of music. You can also listen to your favourite stations whenever you are in the world.
